Help please. I am trying to set up a connection between a Windows XP box and a Linux 9.0 box, the problem is that when I ping the Linux box it appears to the Windows machine but when I try to ping from the Linux box I get no reply. I am using a standard networking kit, two ethernet cards and a switch etc. I have entered an IP address for both and a subnet mask. Also according to the book I must configure the global variables in Samba, but this button does not appear. I get a message saying x amount of packets sent but with 100% packet loss, what am I doing wrong?
Sorry which firewall do you mean? I don't have a firewall enabled, but obviously the Linux box is on the network or the Windows box couldn't see it. If I need to use the software from the networking kit I will have to format the Linux box floppy drive and I am also having trouble finding the right commands to do this.
I mean the firewall on the computer with Windows. U said u can ping Linux computer from Windows but you cant ping Windows computer from Linux, right? In that case firewall is the only reason I can think of.

I dont understand what u mean. According to your first post I assume u want to access shares on Windows computer from Linux (and the fact that u can ping Windows from Linux means Windows computer can see Linux one)
make sure the xp firewall isnt on, the one xp comes with. Go to My Network Places and right click it, selecting properties. Select the connection to the linux box and right click, again selecting properties. Click the advanced tab. Make sure the first option is unchecked.
