redhat-config-bind <--- is this the prog that can make my RH8 a DNS server?
because my RH8 has internet sharing.. and its working properly (using dial-up connection)
my win2k (as a client) gateway is the ip of the RH8 machine..
but the primary / secondary DNS is set to the name server of my isp (10.10.10.10 / 10.10.10.11)
now what should i do to just put the IP of the RH8 machine to the client's Primary DNS?
will i use:
redhat-config-bind
how? can someone help me?
some say i should download bind..
hmmmmmm
any suggestions? thank you very much..
For what you want to do, you should be up and running already. If your Windows 2000 client is using the IP address of your ISP, and are successfully making DNS queries through your Linux machine, you are done and don't need BIND.
However, if you wish to run your own DNS server, you will need to install a package called 'bind' and 'bind-utils'. Your Windows 2000 PC will then point to the Linux machine for DNS, instead of your ISP's DNS server. 'redhat-config-bind' is only a frontend to modifying the configuration files for bind. I recommend editing the files yourself, you'll learn more that way.
the case is like this:
192.168.0.1 = RH8 / dial-up connection / internet is shared / samba works
192.168.0.2 = Win2k Pro / gateway is 192.168.0.1 / samba works / cant access internet if primary DNS is 192.168.0.1
For what you seem to need, you'll be ok installing RedHat's "caching-nameserver.rpm" package, which is useful for not to get very deep into DNS. (only for queries from your internal network, not for maintaining a DNS domain)
