RedHat and OvisLink SR-200 Router

First of all, please forgive me if I am trying find a solution to a trivial problem. I am very new to Linux.

I have just installed RedHat 8.0 on my second HD, with Win98 and XP on the other HD. Matter of fact I have installed RH a few times and heres what I came up with:

1) With RTL8029 ethernet card connected to OvisLink Super Mini 5 Port Switch, Switch connected to Router, and Router connected to cable modem, I cannot seem to get connected to the internet under RH once installed. Tried playing with some settings, but none seem to work. Cannot activate ethernet card.

2) With computer directly connected to cable modem I reinstall RH and no problem......automatic connection.

Router and switch setup works fine under Windows. Kind of lost here, been searching for a few days now and can't seem to find anything on this.

Please help!! Thanks in advance.

You need to set the gateway. You can access other machines on the network right? Now one of those has a modem and a connection to the internet. The IP of that machine is the IP of your "router" or gateway. All you have to do is edit your interfaces file (/etc/network/interfaces on my machine - debian 3.0) and add a line like

gateway 192.168.0.1

under the appropriate interface.
