I recently installed Red Hat 9, everything seemed to work great...just one small problem. I have no internet access. I am an university student so I access the net through an ethernet port. I'm using the very common LinkSys LNE100TX card. This card worked fine in RH8 right from the getgo...but it won't work in RH9. I'm almost certain that Red Hat 9 did NOT detect this card during setup. So I tried to go to "Network Configuration" after the installation. The only device that showed up was "Other Ethernet Device" and when I try to configure it, there wasn't even a tulip driver to pick from the drop down list. Did anyone else have this problem? This seems especially surprising since this card worked perfectly fine in RH8. Please help! I want internet on my linux box
No, it doesn't detect new hardware on a reboot. I have noticed, however, that it kinda halts for a 10-15 seconds when "Searching for new Hardware" during boot up...but ultimately it doesn't do anything...just keeps booting.
As far as I know, all Linksys ethernet cards use the tulip kernel module. Make sure it's installed. For RH9, you should be able to find it here: /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o
If for whatever reason it's not there, or you're not running the stock kernel, you'll have to recompile your kernel and add the tulip driver (or compile it as a module).
If the module is there, try running "modprobe tulip". If that fixes your problem, append the following line to your /etc/modules.conf file to get the module to load on boot: "alias eth0 tulip".
If that doesn't solve your problem, please post what modprobe spits out, and the contents of /proc/pci.
I had the same EXACT problem when I installed Psyche and installing Shrike did not change a thing. In any case, after much troubleshooting, I discovered that there was a conflict between my PCI cards. Kudzu picked up my sound card (Ensoniq) and all other PCI cards but did not see the LNE100. I moved the Linksys card to other slots on my board but it still didn't work. I took out my sound card and replaced it with the LNE100, and kudzu detected it on reboot. I put the sound card back but it was not seen. So it's my sound card or my network card, course I chose network - I have a built in sound card on my motherboard, so I'm using that until I'm able to figure out a different approach - Manually setting IRQ's in BIOS??
Anyways, Try it, hope it works
