red hat 6.1 ftp issue

I stumbled onto this forum about a week ago and its been very helpful

in getting a win2k client connected to Red Hat. Reading the many posts

now has me able to telnet and ping between the two machines (win2k and

Red Hat 6.1).
But now I'm having an ftp issue. I've read that the default RH 6.1

installation includes ftpd. However when I try from either win2k or

locally from linux I get "connected to 172.x.x.x" for about 5 seconds,

then "connection closed by remote host."

/etc/inetd.conf shows

ftp--stram--tcp--nowai--root--/usr/sbin/tcpd--in.ftpd -l-a

/var/log/secure shows "connected from 172.x.x.x" then "421 service

cannot execute /usr/sbin/i.ftpd: no such file or directory."

on my system /usr/sbin doesn't contain 'in.ftpd' only 'in.tftpd.'

I tried installing Pure-ftp which is also supposed to work 'fresh out

the box' but I can't open a connection to any ftpd server.

I'm sort of seeing that the wrong daemon may be set up but beyond that,

I'm stumped.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

ftp is a separate rpm package
and you are recommended to use a more secure package if you want to open yourself to the internet, eg Proftp
These are available from www.rpmfind.net
