Questions about Latency

Hi,

I have a 3MBPS internet connection which i fairly say that it served 750 workstation using a squid proxy server. By the time i came back from my christmas vacation, i noticed that we cannot achieved a full 3mpbs speed with 300 PC browsing together (my ISP has issued an MRTG for me to monitor) compared to last years graph. I called my ISP to check and let them ping flood my server, but surprised to see, my MRTG graph just achieved 3.80MBPS, so in short my connection is working fine.

Now the question is, could be my network be the culprite? If it is, how do i find the problem since non of my 3com switches shows errors, could this be workstations? infected by a virus? I hope someone could lead to a brighter end.

Thanks and God Bless!

Anything interesting in the squid and system logs on the server?

Another thing I would do... regardless, is install and run Malware Bytes' "mbam" tool on any windows clients and run it. This last couple of weeks it's caught trojans on machines with fully updated Norton and McAfee on them. Can't hurt in any event:

Ironically, this is so good, crackers have taught their malware to look for an mbam-setup.exe file and not allow it to run! Just rename the exe before running it if you encounter problems.

Could just be squid is overloaded. How much disk space have you given it? Maybe your browsers are hitting a lot of sites that aren't in cache.
