Question on FTP 421 no transfer timeout

I use ftp to fetch a file from an ftp server, which takes about 15 mins to finish. However, after 300 seconds, the ftp server always sends a message like "FTP 421 no transfer timeout (300 seconds)" -- trying to log me off, however, actually fails to log me off and the transfer still continues.

I am very curious why this would happen, since the transfer is always on during these 300 seconds? And there are not any more this 421 error messages after the first 300 seconds.

And is it possible to turn off this auto log off mechanism at the server? Or just enlarge the timeout value (say 2000 seconds)?

The server is under my control and it is running on mandrake 9.2.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Sorry I don't know. It seems there right after I install mandrake 9.2.

I just found a window (configureation->KDE->Network->Preferences) setting this value.

However, there are a few other parameters which I don't know their meaning:

Socket read: 15 sec
Proxy connect: 10 sec
Server connect: 20 sec
Enable passive mode(PASV)?
Mark partially uploaded files?

Could anybody explain these parameters? Thanks.
