Query: connect with ex. ser. modem pppd died unexpectedly

Hi, I think this is the best place to explain my problem.

I have just bought an external serial modem, a 'Phonic Pro', and have had some trouble connecting up to the internet with it. I used KPPP on RedHat 9, I just entered my Wanadoo connection number and password on the 'dialogue' setup option and left out all the rest.

It dialled fine, but then it gave out the error message 'pppd died unexpectedly, Exit status 16. KPPP could not prepare PPP log its very likely that pppd was started without the debug option.' I checked my pppd version; 2.4.1. I also vi-ed some error messages, but I forgot to tranfer it over so that xp can get at them.

Please let me know if you need any more information, then I will have to reboot *sigh*, but any suggestions will be very helpful.

Exit status 16 means "The link was terminated by the modem hanging up"

I have pppd 2.4.1 so it shouldn't be a problem with my 2.4 kernal.

My bro is just laughing at me, he doesn't have the time for linux, he configured it in a snap for WinXP (I'm using the modem now, mmm flashing L.E.D.s) but there should be a way to get it working under linux, help?

So you want error logs eh?

Opener: received OpenDevice
Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon
In parent: pppd pid 2894
Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device
Kernel supports ppp alright.
Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device
It was pppd that died
pppd exited with return value 16
Sending 2871 a SIGUSR1
Opener: received RemoveSecret
Opener: received RemoveSecret
Opener: received OpenResolv
Opener: received OpenResolv
Opener: received RemoveLock
Opener: received PPPDExitStatus
