there are plenty of tutorials at all levels for this. If this one is not what you want, you may need to be more specific in your question.

You can check alla's account settings with:

# pure-pw show alla

When you create an account, you have to remember to update the /etc/pureftbd.pdb file by:

# pure-pw mkdb

... all this is in the tutorial.

I'm having the same EXACT problem. I've been trying to get FTP to work for a week now. In short all the installation stuff goes fine, everything. I did EXACTLY everything in that tutorial (not to mention I know the pure-ftpd.org docs by heart now) and still, nothing. It just won't connect. Like a bad password or something.

220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [TLS] ----------
220-You are user number 2 of 50 allowed.
220-Local time is now 21:41. Server port: 21.
220-IPv6 connections are also welcome on this server.
220 You will be disconnected after 15 minutes of inactivity.
USER mike
331 User mike OK. Password required
PASS (hidden)
530 Authentication failed, sorry
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...

I enter everything as needed.

I'm using RH Fedora Core 2. Nothing stingy, however I'll tell you that cpanel is installed on this box. However I don't see how that can interfere. If more details are needed just ask. I have honestly tried everything, I'm about to rip my heard off =\

Thanks.

Yup - the server is telling you either the password is wrong or that you're persona non-grata anyway.

If you are running the server - check out your accounts to make sure the password is really what you think it is... like it hasn't been assigned a random one or something. (see post #4)

Tell me what happens.

Nope, didn't work. I changed the password via "pure-pw passwd mike" and still doesn't connect.

Here is also the "pure-pw show mike":

Login : mike
Password : $1$ZKrYLq10$x6x14VNK/1LFhIx/vhBAY0
UID : 32006 (ftpuser)
GID : 32018 (ftpgroup)
Directory : /home/ftpusers/mike/./
Full name :
Download bandwidth : 0 Kb (unlimited)
Upload bandwidth : 0 Kb (unlimited)
Max files : 0 (unlimited)
Max size : 0 Mb (unlimited)
Ratio : 0:0 (unlimited:unlimited)
Allowed local IPs :
Denied local IPs :
Allowed client IPs :
Denied client IPs :
Time restrictions : 0000-0000 (unlimited)
Max sim sessions : 0 (unlimited)

*Just a note, for some reason I'm also getting a "Warning: invalid line [rob]" while changing the password. However I do not think this poses much relevance as this is the first time I'm seeing this and DEFINITELY not the first time I'm changing a virtual user's password.*
