Proxying question

Hey all. I'm running a qmail server (v.1.03) with an SMTP-auth patch. The patch is working just fine, but here's the problem (and why I think this should be in the networking section and not the security section). Our firewall is listed as the MX, and it in turn proxies mail to the internal qmail server via the smtproutes file in the /control directory. However, when I try to perform smtp-auth, I think its getting stopped at the firewall's qmail box, i.e. its getting kicked because the firewall's qmail doesn't allow relaying. Using a db for a passwd file isn't a possibility for various reasons, and I have to continue using /etc/passwd accounts.

Any advice?
