Red face Proxy & Mail Server

Hello linuxers,

I'm looking for a Proxy Server (HTTP,FTP,Gopher,Socks)
and an email server.

I am behind a modem (dial-up), so what I want the Proxy and /or Mail Server to do is have an auto dial-up feature.

Also my box is running under 64k RAM.

For the Proxy:
I would like to have a user/password security, in addition to IP-Based security.

What available proxy and mail server in Linux can do the above specs?

I hope to have your reply ASAP. Please help!!!

For the proxy I would reccommend squid.

The mailserver, I wouldn't reccommend anything. Running a mail server on dialup is not going to be very effecient and is likely to cause delivery problems.

If you are just looking to download mail and store it then take a look at using fetchmail nad courier-imap.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry for the 64k ; it was suppose to be 64MB RAM. Deja vu on my old days of computing I think .

BTW, my distro is Fedora Core 1.

I may go with Squid as suggested.

I'm behind a dial-up modem connection. I want to automate the connection to the internet when needed and disconnects it after 5 minutes of idle activity.

For the mail
SMTP : if 5 mails in queue or a mail is present for 7 minutes it will auto-dial to the ISP
POP3 : Auto-dial every 2 hours to fetch mail or whenever a connection to the internet is established.

My Box will run Squid and a Mail Server (Postfix?) .

How do I do that?

For SMTP I would always use qmail. For a pop server vpopmail is probably the best.

As for deciding when to dial, this is something I haven't tried but running "qmailctl stat" gives the queue statistics (how many are waiting) You could quite easily run a cron job every 5 or so minutes to check the number of e-mails in the queue then if it connects to send it can also download the new messages using fetchmail. In addition it will always initiate the connection every 2 hours regardless of the number of messages in the queue to download new e-mail.
