Thanks for posting the default config. I now have anonymous access which isn't what I want, but it's light years ahead of where I was.

I'm having trouble with the bit quoted above. I've created a user account as per normal, but I can't log on via ftp. The user isn't in ftpusers and the error I get from the proftpd logs is 'Incorrect password'. I know the password is good because I can shell in with it.

Any ideas where I can look to troubleshoot this? I'm not convinced it's a Proftpd problem - this isn't my box and I think perhaps there may be some settings shutting this down that I'm not aware of.

Got it, I needed to create an /etc/pam.d/ftp file with the following contents:

#%PAM-1.0
auth    required        pam_unix.so     nullok
account required        pam_unix.so
session required        pam_unix.so
