Problems connecting to my computer through SSH and DLink router.

I have installed ssh server on my Ubuntu (12.04) machine and checked to see that it is running and works locally with
Code:
ssh -v localhost
But I can't get it to work if I log in from a different ip address. I have Dlink router and port forwarded port 22 for my ssh but still unable to log-in. I use the command
Code:
$ ssh my_ip_address
where my_ip_address is substituted with my actual ip. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Do you mean a machine on the internet? I take it you know your external internet IP address? What message do you see when you try to SSH to your machine?
You could always try something like this site from your Ubuntu machine to confirm that port forwarding is working:
https://www.grc.com/shieldsup
You should see port 22 as open.

Well, pinging localhost will ping 127.0.0.1; whereas pinging my_ip_address will actually use the network.

Best guess: firewall is blocking, or nic misconfigured?

After restarting and using $ssh user@ip everything started working.
