Problem with Fedora internet connection

Hello!

I'm using the Fedora distro and I'm having problems with connecting to the internet.

My modem is a Sagem F@ST 3344.

If I try to start the connection with adsl-start and then I check it with adsl-status I get the following error:

Link is down(can't read pppd PID file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppd)

then I wanted to see if there is any problem with the eth0 controller so I ran the: ifconfig eth0:
errors:0 dropped:0 ... ok, the controller is working and the lights are ON on both ends(modem and eth0).

Then I restarted the network with /etc/init.d/network restart and when it was determining the IP for eth0 (why would it determine the IP? i connect through a modem not a router and it is a DHCP connection...so it should get the IP when it connects to my ISP DHCP server, right?) it got the following error:

Determining IP information for eth0... FAILED

---------------------------------------------

so, any ideas?

Thanks,
Observator

Hi, observator!

Did you set the IP of your modem as the default gateway?

Observator 11-14-2006 08:20 AM

ummm...no...i guess...but that shouldn't be a problem...because i don't have to do that on Win...or is it?

can you tell me how do i set the default gateway? thanks!

Hallo!

I cannot tell you exactly how, because I'm at my work now. I think in the Gnome desktop it is in system -> administration -> network -> click on eth0 -> configure. But I'll check tomorrow, and post the instructions.

Hi!

The sequence in Gnome is: System -> Administration -> Network -> (root password)-> Tab: Devices -> Edit -> Statically set Ip Addresses -> type IP address and default gateway -> Save -> deactivate and then activate eth0.
So you'll need to know the IP address and default gateway to use with your modem. If you have a Windows system also, you can look them up there.

Good luck!

The two or more machines are interacting with a script to verify the request of the one machine to the other machine filtering the details for DNS. The process is determining the IP lease on every request. Most times the lease is renewed, with the same previous IP.
