Problem of RedHat 9 kernel configuring to set CONFIG_PACKET=y

Hello everyone! I am relatively new to the Red Hat administering, so any advice will be highly appreciated. I need to reconfigure my Red Hat 9 kernel to set the variable CONFIG_PACKET=y to activate my application. First of all, I would like to find out whether this variable is already set as required. I used the default kernel installation with no network question prompted.
As far as I know it is not set by default. Is this understanding correct? If no how to reconfigure the kernel to set it up? Thank you in advance.

I am sort of new myself but have recompiled a couple of kernals. You need ythe source kernal , usually a tar.gz. unpack it in your home directory where you have permissions . bring up terminal go to /home/name whatever you stored the kernal in and type make menuconfig and get ready to select items, I recommend you select ramdrive support in the kernal not as a module as the kernal will not start correctly. after make menuconfig do make modules then do make modules_install and then to finish it off do a make install. They are all necessary. If correct it will overwrite your old kernal , but if you choose a kernal other than the one installed , it will give you two to choose from in boot. This is without lilo. there a lot of problems with the new 2,6,2 kernal so I would stay from that one for now unless you really want a chalange. Have fun. Marty Hope I have been of help many kernals online around 40 mb.

Thanks a lot. Actually I've already found out that it's configured by default exactly as I need but it a good thing to know anyway.

You are welcome. The cool thing about this operating system is if something doesn't work ,you can fix it yourself. Marty well at least some of the time.
