problem connecting Opensuse 10.2 to Suse 9.3

I have installed Suse 9.3 on one machine and Opensuse 10.2 on another and I am having problem connecting the 2 together. When I try to ping each other it works fine but I can not connect to the Suse 9.3 from Opensuse 10.2 ie. I have installed the Proftpd on Suse 9.3 and it works fine but when I try to connect to the ftp from Opensuse 10.2 it does not work. I try to connect at the terminal or using firefox, the outcome is the same. I have tried to look at NIS or NFS and not sure what do I have to do. I have tried every thing I could and there was not luck. Please help if you have any idea what the problem is or if there is something I need to do.

Many thanks

This sounds like a firewall issue. Have you got a firewall running on either machine? Of yes, then you need to open ports for what ever type of connection you want to run.

Another possibility is the /etc/hosts.alllow and /etc/hosts.deny files. Have a look there to see if you are allowing the protocols and IP addresses to connect.

Thank you for your reply. I did check before and there was no firewall running. Before I try to sort out this problem I have another one. I was playing around with my machine (Susu 9.3), checking all those directories and command and now I can not log in as root. When I tried to open Yast and enter the password it keeps saying " incorrect password; please try again ". When I am at the terminal and type su and enter the password it say " su: exit: No such file or directory " I guess I have messed up and deleted something. Do you know what do I have to do? I though about reinstall the server ( it is just a test server ) but I would like to fix it if I can. Please help

Many thanks

At the moment I can not look at the /etc/host.allow and deny as I can not log in as root

Me again. I just checked and the web browser was marked for work offline and that was the reason why it did not work. I can now connect to my ftp server on Suse 9.3. I am still not sure why it works now.
I am still not sure how to access the Suse 9.3 server from Opensuse 10.2? How does it work? I have no idea. Does it work like windows domain- you have the server and workstation and from the workstation you can logon the server? How do I create user from the server so that the user can log on from the workstation? How the user can access share?

It all depends on what server(s) you have running. You can have an FTP server, a http server, samba server and the list goes on.

To find out what you have running, open a konsole, and run the command '/sbin/ps aux' without the quotes. You will have a long list of stuff. Have a look for your servers there. If you have samba server running, you will see 'smbd' ( no quotes ). NFS shows up as 'nfsd'.

Do you have Webmin running? If not, you may want to install it. You can configure and manage most servers from Webmin, from the server, or from a web browser on any other machine that has ip access to the server.

As for your root password, there are tutorials around on how to delete and how to create a new ( known ) root password. Off the top of my head, I believe you have to boot to single user mode, to change the root password, but I would have to look the rest up. If you google it, you should be able to find a how-to.

Hi Camorri

I have Webmin installed and it works fine ( I believe ) but when I tried to change the root password it returned " The password for user root has been changed successfully " . I have booted the server from DVD and change the file shawdow as adviced from the forum but after that when I tried to open YaST it came back with the message "Su returned with an error " Do you know what it mean?

I can now connect to the ftp server from Opensuse 10.2, not sure what I did. Still I am not how to use it. How do I configure the ftp server? I have Proftpd.

Thanks
