private address internet gateway

My isp has a wireless lan and perform NATing and ip MASQUERading for his clients to connect them to the internet. The connection is made by XDSL type and PPP0 protocol through a nic card in a linux box.
I want to use my linux box to be a router for another computer. My question is do i have to have a public ip assigned to my linux box to perform as a router or that shouldn't matter as long as I do my configuration right?

Your router needs to have a valid IP address for the network which it is attached.
