Printer sharing betw Mandrake & Win ME

First off, I'll admit that Windows ME sucks royally, but my wife can't handle much else. (Ducks as a dish is thrown at me...)

Since I've got the laptop and she's got the PC, I've hooked the printer (an old, but still running strong HP II) to her machine. I've got the PCs networked so that each can see the other. I've even mounted the PRINTER$ directory on my machine so that it will reload at login each time. Now I'm trying to print a test page to the printer I've loaded in CUPS. I have no idea if I've got it configured properly. Obviously I don't because no test page came out.

Can anyone give me a primer on how to connect to an HP II printer via a Windows network?

Thanks, again, all!

well, does she have printing services for unix installed on her machine. go to control panel and add/remove programs, then click windows programs or whatever and see if in the printing there is a printing services for unix. then make sure you have the correct name of her printer. then make sure her computer name and ip info are in your /etc/hosts file. then you will have to add a new printer in linux. then, darn i can't remember all the details, but you must have the exact same name as her printer share is called. so right click on the printer she is sharing and click on sharing. the share as name will be there. use that name when setting up with linux. hey do this tell me the options you see when setting it up, and i will look at my linux box and tell you what needs to be there. i think there is like location. that will be //hercomputername then i think there is queue or something like that. that will be her printers shared name. then i think there is like aliases or some such garbage. i don't think this matters. i am not at home right now. if nobody else replies with better info, please send me the info requested and we will get this working....for sure.

I checked through Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup and didn't find anything for printer sharing, much less one for Unix. I also checked through the Network configuration. Even though I see File & Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and File & Printer Sharing for NetWare Networks, I don't see one for Unix. Currently the F&PS for Microsoft is installed. Should I change that for the one for NetWare?

Start > Settings > Printers
Right click on the printer and share call it alex or something!

Install Samba (on the Mandrake disc KMenu>Configuration>Packaging>Install Software)

Then run cups, add a new printer.

For the type Windows via SAMBA should be at the bottom of the list, select this

for port enter

smb://workgroupname/wifespcname/alex

Select the correct print drivers and it SHOULD work.

For some reason the CUPS/SAMBA/WINDOWS/USB/KYOCERA combo didn't like this much (spat out partial pages), but a good old parrall cable works fine

You just want the windows filesharing installed/
