PPTP vpn, windows to linux

hello,
i'm attempting to configure a VPN server (PPTP) on a slackware linux box. i've downloaded and installed poptop, and made (what i believe to be) the correct configuration changes to the server.

however, i'm having trouble connecting from my windows xp machine. i get an error 691 after the connection is made.

i've tried two different machines for hosting the server. my first attempt was on my gateway/firewall itself. it's a slackware box running the 2.4.21 kernel and iptables as the firewalling mechanism. i've specifically allowed ports 47, 50, 51, and 1723. the second option i've tried is using an internal machine on the network to host poptop, and forwarding those ports to this machine. i receive the same error for both setups.

i have a few questions regarding this problem.

what options does the kernel of the host machine have to have compiled in? such as ppp, pty, etc...

i've heard vpn connections are more complicated than your standard port forwarding/allowing. does anyone have an example iptables script available?

and i'm specifically interested in PPTP, and not IPSEC, as all the users which will be connecting to the VPN are windows users, and as the sys admin, i'd rather not have to deal with any 3rd party software which would complicate the process.

thank you.

Which version of pptpd are you using?
Have you compiled the kernel modules?
Do they load when you start pptpd?
What is between your XP machine and the poptop server?
What does your "debug" log show? pls.
