pppd exit 1 help please!!!!

google has been completely useless in helping me sort this, so i would really appreciate some help

trying to configure a laptop modem, and i think its all working, it dials and everything. but when it is connecting to the network it says the pppd daemon was ended, and had an exit code of 1.

man pppd has an essay of information to wade through before you get to the exit code definitions, and helpfully it says "something critical went wrong" or something equally helpful. (grrrr)

so does anyone know what could be causing it to fail. thanks very much.

you could try running pppd with "debug" option (put: debug in /etc/ppp/options) and look in your systems log-files, if it points out anything more helpful.

from man pppd:

1 An immediately fatal error of some kind occurred, such as an essential system call failing, or running out of virtual memory.

the problem was that i had previously set up a lan connection to my wireless router, and this caused some errors with authentication.

the solution was to comment out the "auth" option in /etc/ppp/options

good for future reference i spose
