I have a RH9 and ADSL so I might be able to help.
First of all can you post a little bit more information about your linux box?

What does it say if you go to console (logged as root) and type in this: ifup ppp0
Can you post the output when typing "ifconfig" into console?
How is your network configured? (KDE) RedHat => System settings => Network

Hi, result from ifup ppp0 is nothing. But ipconfig is as below. As i say ppp can't be activated. I have pppoe to my isp. In network, i have eth0(1 nic installed ) and xdsl/ppp0 connection. Everytime when booting, in the command line it will show ppp0 timed out/failed.

have u set up your adsl connection with the info it requires username password etc.
To do this u will need to open a terminal window and use the command
adsl-setup
to start ur connection after this u will use the command adls-start and of course adsl-stop

<Ol>Origy 01-19-2005 02:46 PM

Sounds like to me that your connection is somehow misconfigured.
Can you doublecheck your settings? (KDE) RedHat => System Settings => Network => (select your PPP0 xDSL connection)
Have your connection use DHCP to obtain an IP address from your ISP. Make sure you have the proper DNS server entries.

I usually start/stop my ADSL connection by going into console logged as root and type "ifup ppp0" and "ifdown ppp0" ("/sbin/ifup ppp0" or "/sbin/ifdown ppp0" if the previous doesn't work).

EDIT: Do your modem lights flash when you try to connect?

Hi, yes i have setup everything in the internet configuration and there i setup xDSL connection then proceed with user acount , password, dhcp with dial up, dns and others. Do you mean linux can dial up to dsl without third party software ? i tried before and nothing came up with adsl-setup. How do you setup your linux box ? I'm using pppoe with a modem . pls advise. thanks

have u got the drivers for your modem installed? what make of modem do u have?

DanielTan 01-20-2005 09:02 PM

I don't think i have installed the modem driver , i thought linux would recognise my modem and using its own pppoe to connect. My modem is ZTE zXDSL 831, provided by my isp. Its china made. Any idea where should i get this driver for linux ? BTW when i type ifup ppp0, it shows

/sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 1610 Terminated $ connect "$@">/dev/null 2 > &1

Also adsl-status shows : You have enabled demand connection:adsl-status maybe inaccurate. Link is down(can't read pppoe.pid file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe) . Hope it give you enough indications what's the problem. Thanks

Which part of connection shows misconfigured ? Earlier i selected dialup to obtain ip address but i have changed to dhcp, dns server entries is automatically obtained from isp. when i type adsl-start, it shows nothing. But if i type ifup ppp0, it shows "/sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 1610 Terminated $ connect "$@">/dev/null 2 > &1 " . If type adsl-status it shows "You have enabled demand connection :adsl_status may be inaccurate. Link is down (Can't read pppoe.pid file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe). Modem light is flashing between the lan and dsl. BTW do i need to install driver for the modem ? what abt pppoe software ?

As I recall correctly, I didn't have to install any drivers for my modem. The link between your modem and the NIC on your computer seems to be fine. Sounds more like a problem establishing your connection as the following line suggests but I can't see what the problem might be.
Quote:

/sbin/adsl-start: line 217: 1610 Terminated $ connect "$@">/dev/null 2 > &1
Personally despite DHCP, I entered both DNS servers provided by my ISP.
Does your modem have signal to the ISP? Can you connect to internet using another PC/system such as Windows? If yes then your ISP settings (username/password) are most likely not the problem.

DanielTan 01-21-2005 06:28 AM

Yes i can dial to internet using windows. How did u setup your setting ? I also can't dial up if using pppoe software such as rp-pppoe, same error message.

I have just read the specs for ur modem
http://www.zte.com.cn/English/03prod...en1.jsp?ID=936
It would seem that u do not need drivers for this particular modem. I have also found a link on the forum
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5&pagenumber=1
with somebody who has had the same prob u r having with this particular modem
I have also googled on this subject and I have to hold my hands up and admit I`m unable to help with this...but someone else maybe able to sorry and good luck :-)

DanielTan 01-21-2005 09:39 PM

Could it be linux cannot detect my modem ip address ? Do i need to set the ip and subnet of my linux to be the same to my modem ip ? In WinXP even if subnet are not the same it will also detected my modem ip.

I do not need to have driver installed for my modem. Could it be linux cannot detect my modem ip address ? Do i need to manually set the ip and subnet of my linux to be the same to my modem ip ? Does your modem ip same as linux ip ?
