Question PPP library & pppd, chat return codes

Hi,

I have two questions -

1)I have a PPP-on and a PPP dialer script using which I can establish PPP connection to my remote host. I read through the man pages and they talk about being able to get the exit code of the pppd and chat commands. This maybe a simple thing but I am new to Linux and am learning new things every day. Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how exactly to get the exit code of chat and pppd commands in the scripts. I need to return the result of these commands to the calling program.

2) I know I can write shell scripts that can establish PPP connection but are there APIs/libaries available that can be used to establish a PPP connection from within a C function? I am running RedHat Linux 9.0.

Thanks,
Ruchika
