ppp connection very slow

Hi,
After reinstalling slack 9.0 my ppp connection seems extremely slow (d/l speed 0.7-0.9k where previously was 4.5+)
the sd/rd led's on the modem even appear to be flashing visibly slower...
I can't figure out why this is so.... any help?
This is with a 56k external modem on ttyS0. Last time i installed everything worked honkey dorey but this time a few problems...

Thanks if you can help...

/etc/ppp/options

# If you have a default route already, pppd may require the other side
# to authenticate itself, which most ISPs will not do. To work around this,
# uncomment the line below. Note that this may have negative side effects
# on system security if you allow PPP dialins. See the docs in /usr/doc/ppp*
# for more information.
#noauth

What kind of modem is it? Brand and model number. IE "US Robotics Sportster 56K"

I almost feel the need to appologize for making you look at this grossly bloated HOWTO, but you may fix your problem, or more importantly, learn something from it.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO

Long ago when I was still on dialup, I never would have dreamed of using 460800 in my options file. I recall going no higher than 131070 or whatever the closest number is to that, I don't recall exactly.

Hope this helps. Get back to me on what kind of modem you use and I might be able to conjure a modem string from memory of my ISP tech support days.

G'luck.

thanks for the help....
your comment re not going that high for connection speed was pretty close.... i slid it back to 57600 ( a much more sensible number really anyway!) and it sped everything back up to how it should be..
must be last time i set it up i chose the sensible setting whereas this time i just went "meh, i'll take the highest...!)

for the record it's a dynalink v1456vqe-r1...

so all fixed now! thanks again
