postfix standard manner, send/receive

When I use to send mail with Sendmail, I would use the command line and enter: Sendmail -t -v and then manually fill out the fields and send them off. How do I do this with Postfix as I cannot find any documentaiton anywhere.

If I decide to enter these parameters into a GUI (for once), what information do I put in for the servers concerned? Where do I get IMAP from as I know I need this to enable me to keep mail on the server whilst I view it from multiple locations. I have been at this all day and still have come up with nothing. I have installed Postfix because my ISP keeps screwing up with my mail server. I have my own domain name registration but whenever I try and start Postfix from: /sbin/service postfix start I get an error msg which states that the service has FAILED. However, when I type: Postfix check, the system starts that the daemon is running so I must have done something right!

The main.cf file is listed below. I've reloaded the file but I cannot start Postfix, or do I not need to use /sbin/service postfix start in order to fully run the app? WHAT I need to be able to do is for mail sent to my domain name to end up in my new server.

Any help would be much appreciated. I have removed Sendmail usring rpm -e and moved the configuration files somewhere else.

with much thanks. JM

I didnt really look at what your config was but all I did was follow this how-to and I've never had a problem. Then started postfix with postfix start.

Thanks for this, but I have already looked at this wesbite. Pls note that after I "postfix start" the service does respond and the service is started. But where do I go from here -

. what commands do I use in order to send mail?
. I use to manually insert the fields: To, Subject, etc with Sendmail, is Postfix the same?
. where do I input my ISP's SMTP server settings to send external mail?
. how can I input these details into my mail client?
. where can I get a copy of IMAP from as I do not have this loaded yet?
. how can I ensure that mail sent to my me@mydomain.co.uk, ends up in my server?

thx for your input, much appreciated. JM
