possible to make own domain name?

Is it possible to make your own domain name by running DNS/BIND on your very own server?

What programs would one need, and would they have to talk to anyone?

This just sparked some curiosity in me, I have never looked into this.

Its possible for you to use any domain name you want Internally as long as it isn't public. For instance, I could be using microsoft.com in my house instead of carnahan.local. If this DNS server is connected to the Internet, then you'll need to use a registered name which many companies can register for you. Godaddy is my registar, but there are probably hundreds out there. You can also use a Domain that isn't able to be used on the Internet, such as the .local that I'm using.

All you need is Bind or another dns server.

Ok so you cant just go and make your own .com for the entire internet to see unless you get it from a company. That is what I thought, just had to clear that up, thanks.

That is correct. All DNS names on the Internet must be registered.
