port forwarding dhcp

hi,

I have got 2 boxes connected to the internet through a router.
I use dhcp. When I wanted to forward some ports (azureus, skype) I came across the remark that to forward ports on a router you need to use a static ip. I cannot connect my computer with a static ip (at least I don't know how to do it).

When I access my router's address (default 192.168.2.1)
I can see dhcp clients: 192.168.2.4 and 2.6

Does it mean that I can assign the static ip addresses (192.168.2.4 and 2.6) on those computers and then I will able to do some port-forwarding. So far I just can't start any downloading in azureus.

edit: I just turned on a laptop on the same network, behind the same router, but with WinXP. I used bitcomet and tried to download the same torrent - the speed is around 100kB/s!!! and the debian etch azureus is still 0kB/s. Is this a linux specific problem then?

thank you

One of the setup pages on the router should list the DHCP range but you should be able use any of them from 2 - 254. This is what needs to be setup to be static.

Lets set the first machine to this.
IP 192.168.2.101
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.2.1
Set DNS to 192.168.2.1 or better perferred to use the DNS ips from provider.

Next machine the same other than IP to say 192.168.2.102
