pinging ipaddress with port number


How do I do that in linux. I know theres a ping command but the follwoing doesn't work
ping 127.0.0.8:6969 but ping 127.0.0.8 works. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think the built in ping tool can deal with anything except ICMP so you won't be able to do that. Both hping and nmap let you send crafted packets though - you should be able to do what you want with one of those.

For more detail, ICMP does not support ports. In fact, it's a portless/socketless protocol, like UDP without ports.

If you are trying to see if that port is open, you would need to connect with Telnet and see if there is any banner or something along those lines.

Or just use nmap and run a port scan on the machine.
