Is there a way to ping the hostname in linux just like windows?

Yeah, just...ping the hostname.

I think your question is actually how to ping Windows machines via hostname, using NetBIOS (useful when there is no local DNS). In that case, you need to setup and run Samba to enable NetBIOS name resolution.
