ping failures resolve external public dns/ip address

Hi Guys,

So this one's been kick'n my butt for awhile. On one of my linux machines (mandriva 2006), if you were to ping a known incorrect domain, say 'ping sdcscsw.test' it doesn't return the typical 'Unknown Host' as I would expect. Rather, it immediately resolves the outside gateway DNS name and address, returning echo requests successfully (of course).

Nothing fancy on this machine. /etc/hosts and network configs are the same as on my other linux machines that work.

GRR!

Dan

i would use ethereal to pull apart the DNS requests being done by the client. also for reference please post /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf. is ping the only thing doing this? what about dig, host or curl?

Talking Fixed It!!!

Thanks for the reply acid_kewpie... so it turned out to be DNS Wildcarding. I'm using DYNDNS to host my dynamic DNS records, and I guess for whatever reason I had selected the Wildcard feature. Simple uncheck of the box fixed my problem.
