ping Destination host unreachable from Ubuntu 10.10

Hi all,
I'm a Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits user.

I have a media hard disk connected by wifi to my router.
When I do a ping from my laptop to the router the result is ok, but when I do a ping to the hard disk the result is "Destination host unreachable".

To try to solve, I connect the laptop to the hard disk by windows then the ping result is ok. Then I restart the laptop and connect from Ubuntu, and the ping is ok and I can see the media hard disk folders.
After a few days returns the problem.

Also, I was trying to ping from the router from the console and the result was ok, but, if I do ping from the System->Administration-> Net tool, the result is lost packets.

Someone can help me?
Thank you in advanced.

We'd need to know more about this hard drive.

When you say ping is it by name or ip address?

Hi Jefro,
The media hard drive, is a Storex Aivx 370HD, whith "wifi n", FTP server, Samba, etc.

The ping is by ip adress (ping 192.168.2.4).
The hard drive network configuration is:
IP: 192.168.2.4
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS: 192.168.2.1
The IP 192.168.2.1 is the router IP.

This information is enough?

Thank you very much.

I hate to keep asking dumb sounding questions. Normally there is no difference between a ping in windows and a ping in linux. This is the reason I am kind of stumped.

Could it be that windows is somehow configuring the device?

Hi,

I thought that, but the windows vista installed is the fresh windows installed with the laptop, and no there software specific for the media hard drive, but windows if I do click in "My network site", directly find the media hard drive and I can see the hard drive.

And with is the difference in ubuntu between a console ping and System->Administration-> Net tools-> Ping?

Best regards

Is the nas static or assigned dhcp reserved?

I guess it may be the whole wireless deal?

Hi Jetro,

NAS is static IP.
What do you mean about whole wireless deal?

I think that the media disk doesn't work fine, I'm speaking with Storex support also.

But, do you know wich is the difference in ubuntu between a console ping and System->Administration-> Net tools-> Ping?

Thank you

I guess it could be that ubuntu has a whacky ping in the net tools section. Use the command line to be sure.

Ping is ping unless you use some switch in the command line options. Man ping for more clues.

I thought I understood that the nas was connected via wireless.??

Normally, I use the ping command in the command line, I only use the net tools to check them.

Yes, the NAS is connected via wireless.

Yesterday I spoke with Storex support, and they told me that I send the NAS to repair.

I think I can mark the thread as "SOLVED".

Thank you very much

Gee, I don't think I helped at all.

Let us know if it fails latter. I'll try to let someone else take a crack at it.
