personal file sharing on Fedora 14
 

Hi all, My wife and I activated the 'Personal File Sharing' on our two Fedora #9 laptops. We can exchange photos and text files via our "public" folders, just fine. Entire setup took less than 20 minutes. We have not been able to get the Fedora #14 version of 'Personal File Sharing' to work using same, online and 'in system', help directions for both the F#9 and F#14. After four eves of looking I have not found any more detailed, install/activate help files anywhere. I can't ask my system manager because that's us. At this point the only thing I can think of is that there may be some part of the F#14 security structure that needs to be addressed and tweaked. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You could try turning off SELinux temporarily and see if that's the issue.

to turn off
echo 0 > /selinux/enforce

to turn on
echo 1 > /selinux/enforce

if you need to change a setting, try running

system-config-selinux

as root.

Dear Smoker - thanks much for your suggestion to turn off SELinux - I think that is really worth a try but, I need to do a little homework first as I am abysmally ignorant about that aspect of Linux. I have a good book on Fedora 14 Administration and security by Richard Petersen which has a chapter on SELinux and another on F14 firewalls. That's my assignment for the rest of this week. Could you suggest a SELinux / firewall text book(s) that I might purchase to help diminish my ignorance a bit?

Hi-I'm baaack -- ho ho ho fun and games continue. I did turn off SELinux and now, the firewall as well. Both the laptops have never had either one enabled before anyway. However tonite I tried again to connect my desktop to the laptops via Personal File Sharing and Whammo! the following CRASH! information was forthcoming and reply sent off. What an adventure - I hope I am not doing something really stupid here but I would be OK with it all being my error if I could learn what was going on.

Comment: All I did was to 'enable' "Mulicast DNS (mDNS) on my firewall Configuration screen. Prior to this the only service enabled was SSH. This action was part of a six day attempt to get "Personal File Sharing" to work on my new F14 install. I have two 'Linux Certified' laptops with F#9 installed. After a 15 min setup time both laptops share photos and documents perfectly. Both laptops have the fire walls disabled. When the "network' screen is opened, both laptops show themselves and the other one as members of the network. When I setup my desktop the two other members show up on the network screen but no contact is possible either way. When laptops try to share with the F14 machine no connection can be made and desktop machine identity is not shown on the network screen on the laptops. Following message appears; "Unable to mount location" DBus errororg.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply (time out by message bus)
All I want to do is share photos and text files between three computers via the Public folders on each. Help please, thank you - Jared Simmons
