pdc & DNS or pdc & wins

Hy !
I`am thinking of using a linux Samba pdc with about 200 clients.
Now I ` am not sure what I need to use a

1. DNS Server or
2. a Wins Server ?

Is it possible to use each in combination with a samba pdc and win2k clients or does a DNS server not work ?
THANX

Are you asking about a separate WINS/DNS server, or installing it on the Samba machine?

I would recommend enabling the WINS server on Samba for a client base that is that large. I would also turn on DNS and populate your DNS server with entries for all your servers (I wouldn't bother adding 200 clients, though).

With Microsoft Networking, you can never have too many naming services. You should always expect that at least one naming service related to a Microsoft server or client is going to crap out or be flaky occasionally.

Tanks for your suggestion!
So here i what i would like to do!

Building up a Samba PDC with Wins,
using the same pc for BooTP and TFTP,
build up a backup pc with heartbeat and rsync,
let some users join the pdc and watch how it works.

The Problem will be to manage the novell file server rights.
As i learned in the past few weeks the will be no easy way to
do so, so i will manage the rights on the novell pc.

So i see this step a the first to get rid of Novell and windows nt (on the server side!) and if our programmers will get the software work under
Linux the workstations will also be reinstalled!

Has someone experienct with samba an 200 Clients ?

im setting something like that up for about 150 clients... having lots of problems though.

my problem is with running samba as a DC... i already posted about my problems and am waiting for responses. i can smbclient -L to localhost, but my windows clients cant connect. its most likely a DNS/WINS problem. i dont use novell though.

so,

that seams to be interesting for both of us!

You are also thinking about changing the NDS to samba ?

Well maybe we can give each other some ideas !

How are you planing to change ?
What Hardware will you use ?
How many workstations have you got?

By the way i have also a problem connecting to the dc!
It seams as if the deamon is not running!

If i do

>> echo "hello" | telnet localhost 139

the connection is blocked !
