PCMCIA Satellite Modem Cards?

Hello All,

I find myself having need of locating some PCMCIA (Or USB) Satellite modem cards (and service) for a research project. Has anyone else here had a setup like this working? What service companies and hardware do you recommend?

Cheers,
Silas Bennett

Unfortunately...

Yes. ;0)

As I said in the original post, this is for a research project which has some rather special requirements. I need to put together a system that can get an Internet connection _anywhere_ in the US, and will eventually be run by an embedded linux appliance. ( Ports available to me are: PCMCIA, USB, Ethernet, & Serial ) All of the hardware has to fit into the (small) embedded enclosure, which rules out the (as you called them "Sane") external broadband Satellite modems. The bandwidth requirements are very low, so I don't really care what the bandwidth is. The satellite up-link is a fallback "no other communication methods available" link.

So Again...

Does anyone know of a source for this type of hardware?

Cheers,
Silas

Well then. Get a mac mini and an external modem and it'll take up the same space as a laptop :-D

Otherwise. Well, truthfully, they do not make internal satellite cards. Mostly because why would they, you already gotta lug around a dish so why put the reciever in the computer? Also because you need a power source for the tranmitting and recieving and access to the satellite systems that they can verify that you are paying your bills on time and have access to what you are asking for.

Don't care what bandwith is? Well then, get a combination Cellular/GSM/Sattellite phone and a laptop uplink cable and you'll have internet at at least 40k.
