PCMCIA insertion causes hard lockup

I know this is a similar topic to other threads already started on the board, but my problem extends beyond the wireless hook those threads appeared to take. Here is the scenario.

I have performed an install of Slackware 8.1, full install, using the bare.i kernel on a Dell Inspiron 8100. I updated pcmcia-cs to 3.2.0 in attempt to resolve, even though it was stock with 3.1.33.

When I boot the system with a pcmcia card in it (or if I insert the card in console or x) the system completely locks. This occurs with either or both of my 3com Etherlink III 3c589 cards, as well as my Avaya/Orinoco wireless and my Lucent Wavelan, so I don't believe it is central to being a wireless/lucent issue. All of these cards ran fine under my previous Slackware 8.0 (2.2 kernel).

Any suggestions?
