I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "configure" your card. It sounds like your module loaded ok (to be sure, open a terminal and as root type, lsmod). If your module shows up there, the only configuring you should need is to give it an IP address (assuming that you have a static IP address) or point your NIC to look for an IP address from your network's DHCP server.

If this were a regular network interface card (NIC) and you have a static IP address, we would simply open a terminal and type as root, ifconfig -a. (this asks your computer to show us all the network interfaces, working or not).

A typical network UNIX setup creates two network interfaces: one associated with the assigned IP address and the other a loopback which is almost always assigned the address 127.0.0.1 (DO NOT CHANGE THIS ONE). eth0 is your network card. If you had more than one, it would display eth0, eth1, eth2, etc). Notice the word, "UP" at the end of the second line in the eth0 example below. This example shows a card that is configured and working

(EXAMPLE)
*****************************************************
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:20:C0:FF:EE inet addr:10.9.8.7 Bcast:10.9.8.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2030511 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1891771 errors:35 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:35 collisions:8674 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:32 Base address:0x3da0

Local Loopback: inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:8020 Metric:1 RX packets:6429 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:6429 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
**********************************************************

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A STATIC IP ADDRESS ASSIGNED JUST TO YOUR COMPUTER then type netconfig and choose the ``Use dynamic IP configuration' option.

IF YOU DO HAVE A STATIC IP ADDRESS ASSIGNED JUST TO YOUR COMPUTER then run netconfig and choose the ``static IP configuration' option. You will need to know your IP address, your netmask, and your "Gateway" (the server that connects you to the network)

when you are done, type ifconfig eth0. You should see the word, "UP" at the end of the second line just like in the eth0 example below.

rioguia,

I think his problem is at the wireless level, not just the ethernet level.

The wavelan_cs module should work for that card, its the binary driver provided by Orinoco (then a subsid of Lucent), way back in the day. Mandy 8.1 should have the orinoco_cs module precompiled for you also, but they shipped with an ancient pcmcia-cs script, so oddly enough cardmgr currently had no way to load it.

There are 5, yes, 5 drivers I know of that will work with that card. You should have three: wvlan_cs, wavelan_cs, and orinoco_cs.

First see if you can get readings off of your card with what you have:

iwconfig ethX
(where X is whatever the card number is, probably 0, 1 if you have onboard normal ethernet)

If there's settings there, look at the man page for iwconfig and you should be able to sort out the settings enough to get it to make an association with the wireless router, or post back with what kind you're using and I can go through it.

Offhand, this one has been covered a lot, if you search for "wireless and orinoco" here you'll choke on threads.

Cheers,

Finegan
