Password Authentication Server

I know I posted something earlier ... but as I'm reading more and more I realize that maybe I screwed up from the very beginning. Here is what I want

I want a linux domain server .... I want my windows boxes (mainly windows xp pro) to be set up to use the linux domain server and when the windows box connects the user is presented with a login screen. I want the user names and passwords to be stored on the linux server, so when the user enters his or her username and password it authenticates it from the users and passwords on the linux box (probably from samba, I assume). Then I want the windows box to automatically map the directory I specify which would be /home/username to a drive letter I can assign.

Anyways I am using Mandrake 9.1 and I believe the samba version is 2.2.7 (what every came with the mandrake 9.1 distro) ... when I install mandrake is there anything I need to install special to do what I am trying to do ... When I install I select the Network Computer Server checkbox under the server installs and that is all I do. Do I need to select anything else? or do a individual package selection?

Also during install when I set up my lan card is there anything special I need to do, here is what I set.

Automatic IP - Checked
Ip address - grayed out
Netmask - grayed out
DHCP Host Name - empty box
Track network Card ID - unchecked
Network hotplugging - unchecked
Assign host name from DHCP address - checked
Start at boot - checked
Zeroconf Host name - empty box
Host name - empty box

And then once that is all installed here is what I have for my smb.conf file

[global]

;basic server settings
workgroup = COMP
netbios name = ARCSERV
server string = Linux Server %v
socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCV=8192

;PDC settings
os level = 64
preferred master = True
local master = true
domain master = True
domain logons = Yes

;security settings
security = user
encrypt passwords = Yes
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
log level = 2
max log size = 50

;user profiles and directories
logon home = \\%L\%U\
logon drive = z:
logon path = \\%L\profiles\%U
logon script = netlogon.bat

add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g machines -s /bin/false -M %u

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
writeable = yes

[profiles]
path = /home/samba/profiles
writeable = yes
browseable = No
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0700

[netlogon]
comment = Network Logon Service
path = /home/netlogon
read only = yes
browseable = no
write list = root

Then when I try to connect windows xp to the domain it says "a domain controller for the domain arcserv could not be contacted" ... the domain name to type in the box is COMP, right? ... I have already turned off all that windows xp junk and done that registry patch, but still nothing. I can see the samba server in network connections ... under the COMP workgroup and I can contact my different profiles, but I was hoping for a COMP domain.

I have added the users and machine trusts to samba but still to no avail.

Last of all I am running a router to route my cable internet to all my windows boxes. Would I have anymore luck or be better off if I through another nic card into the linux server, activated internet sharing stuff and connected all my computers through a switch?

I know this message is redundant of the one I posted yesterday, but I realized I did not include a whole lot of detail of what was going on, so I apologize for the semi-repeat
