Packets just don't reach eth interface

Hi folks,

I`m having some problem with my linux networking ... i`m configuring a machine to be a firewall and email server (openwebmail) ...

Everything was going just fine when my machine stopped receving any network packets of any kind ... even my loopback ...

Lemme explain things better ... eth0 is configured properly ... link is up ...I reseted my iptables rules ... the ip statis and mask is OK ... and if I try to ping any host . or try to ssh, or try to do anything which is related to networking job .. I can`t ..

I tried to sniff the interfaces and I figured that the packets aren`t reaching the interface ...

Now, i`m trying to recompile the kernel cuz i`m guessing that`s is the problem ...

But i`ve run out of ideas ... so .. if somebody had this problem and could help me outta here it would be really really nice ...

Thank you ...

PS: I`m new to LQ, i couldn`t find any FAQ on this session, I tried to google and search this in LQ but unsuccessfully ... so if you know that this question has already been answered ... please I apologize ...

========================= EDITED ===================

I`ve just realized that some UDP packets are being getting to the eth interfaces and my iptraf is able to sniff `em ... but any other kind of network traffic is being thrown away by the kernel (this is what I think) ...

i`m using kernel 2.6.15.1, i`ll try to update it to 2.6.15.4 and see what happens ...

Tnx!

i don't think changing your kernel will help - if it was working then stopped, then something has gone wrong.

did you upgrade anything??

This is gonna be my last idea ...

I was installing openWebMail and updating perl ...

But I wasn`t usign network by this time, and I don`t think this was the reason ...

================ EDITED ================

No it didn`t worked at all ...
Gosh ... i don`t want to reinstall all the distro again
but I think this is gonna be my solution ...

I remember that i installed Clamav too ... but I don`t think any of these programs have any relationship with the problem ...

I was wondering if any of the kernel configurations under /proc could be misformatted ... I don`t know ...
