Opinion, does samba+winbind work well with windows 2000+active directory?
 

Hello again,

I am curious as to whether samba+winbind works well with windows 2000 domains (active directory). I currently have a windows nt4 pdc and mandrake 9 doing samba+winbind, authenticating to the nt4 pdc.

For other reasons out of my control, we may be upgrading nt4 to 2000, and I am curious as to whether my linux server is going to like that. I am simply searching for opinions, or perhaps people who have already tried it. Is it a good thing to do, does it work well?

Interesting. Too bad I'm not a compiler expert. But interesting nonetheless. Kerberos isn't something I thought of, but it makes perfect sense.

Has anyone had any trouble with authenticating user shares with this setup? I have been able to configure this in a Windows 2000 Mixed environment; however, when it mounts shares (as a regular user), it mounts them in read only mode, even with the 'rw' switch. I've 'chmod a+s' the smbmount and smbumount commands, as I read on Samba's web site and a few technical articles on the web. The only fix I've found has been to mount it as root; however, then it applies the permissions only to the top level directory and the child directories do not inherit it (forcing me to right-click and add write to each subdirectory).

Any ideas?
