openSUSE 10.3 static IP does not work, but DHCP does
Hello, I have been having problems connecting to the internet with the static IP option. I configure all my network settings through YaST under "Network Card Settings". Whenever I use the static IP option my internet connection fails, but I can ping my router on 192.168.1.1 and it responds. I can also ping all my computers on the local network, but when I ping yahoo.com or google.com it says "ping: unknown host yahoo.com". So I am forced to use the DHCP settings to get the internet working again. I do not wish to use this, because I want to take advantage of the various different static IPs I have. However, the static IP option worked under windows, but has failed to work with openSUSE 10.3. Whenever I setup static IP on my FreeBSD box it worked fine, so I know it's not any problems related to my linksys router.
I have even tried entering in the IPs manually with:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.162 broadcast 192.168.1.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 but I still get the same result. I have also tried editing /etc/resolv.conf and entering in the nameservers, but no luck. I even rebooted the computer after entering in the ifconfig for static IP.
I would appreciate it if someone could help me resolve this issue.
Thanks,
looks like i needed to add a gateway, with:
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
------------------------------------
well not exactly, it still wont work in YaST under static ip settings, but if you put it on DHCP, you can then manually change IPs with ifconfig and then you have to add the default gw again with route, so I'm still trying to figure this out. I'm pretty confused right now, so if anyone has any suggestion on what to do I'd appreciate it.
Well it seems to be working for some reason now that I added the nameservers again to /etc/resolv.conf, YaST must of modified /etc/resolv.conf so I had to add the NS to /etc/resolv.conf again,
thanks for the help guys.
This thread started as a duplicate post at this closed thread, for those who would like to see the entire set of replies.
Mods: When you close a thread because it started as a duplicate post, please consider providing cross reference links in both affected threads. Not for the sake of the OP's, the rule breaking duplicate posters -- they deserve some kind of punishment, but for the sake of innocents like those who will benefit from LQ being the archive Jeremy wants it to be. Even better, if there have been a significant number of posts in the thread to be closed, consider merging the 2 threads, again for the sake of the usefulness of the site.
BTW, OP, you don't provide a model ID for your Linksys, is it one of those that can assign fixed IP's based on MAC addresses? In many cases that is preferable to true static IP's on a LAN.
