OpenSSH and Xwindows

I am running Redhat Linux 7.2 and running OpenSSH. I can login
to the my linux computer from Cygwin and get a bash shell which works fine.
The problem lies in that when I try to type startx, It doesn't work when I am on xwindows as another user
It says the following things:
Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhapse you do not have console ownership
This happens no matter what user I am loged in as.
When I login from Cygwin, as root and my computer isn't running xwindows it starts up fine, but showing up on the linux computer screen. As soon as I close the cygwin window, KDE closes.

How can I fix this. I have changed the following lines in my config files to try and make it work:

X11Forwarding yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

ForwardAgent yes
ForwardX11 yess in /etc/ssh/ssh_config.

Any Ideas?
Aaron

I'm assuming you're running xfree under cygwin? http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/xfree/

If you are try 'xhost +' temporarily to see if the problem goes away. you can specify the exact host 'xhost +remotehost', but for trouble shooting try just 'xhost +'

Also try starting the application you want, and not just 'startx', as startx starts the X display server. I'm assuming you want to export a linux/X application's gui to your windows+cygwin box?

I'm busy with a same sort of setup. Telnetting into one linux box (on my LAN) starting applications and displaying then on the other box.
I have 3 computers. One of em windowsXP, the other 2 mandrake linux. I want to run KDE on linux 1 but display (and control) it on linux 2. Sort of an application server idea.
This is my routine :
From linux 2 I telnet into linux 1. Then I do a >xterm -display hostname:0.0
The following error occurs:
Xlib: connection to "hostname:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to server
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm.real Xt error: Can't open display: hostname:0.0

Now I did read the previous posts so I tried a >xhost +hostname but then I get :
xhost: unable to open display ""

At first I thought : Maybe the X-server isn't running so I did a >startx. When KDE was finally there (linux 2 is a P100) I did a CRTL+ALT+F1 to make sure the X-server was still running but the same problem persists.
I think I have to manually add the host to X somewhere to give it the right permissions...but where?
I'm puzzled....any ideas?

Kamil

did you try this *in* your KDE session?

That means you need to have X running on the current console, not just on the computer. Can't open display "" usually means you don't have X running. So try it again in a kterm if you haven't.

Also, the easiest and safest way to do this is with SSH, as the first poster is trying. SSH by default tunnels your X traffic, and so you don't have to do xhost.

eg. from a kterm
try ssh -X remote_linux_box netscape

or...
ssh -X remote_linux_box
netscape&

You may not need the -X flag.
