only some webpages are displayed over ICS

I'm having a rather weird problem with my ps2 linux box.
It's connected to a switch that my windows network is on, and I'm running ICS from my windows xp machine. all the windows computers on the networks work well. The XP machine is also running dhcp.
The linux box has correctly set IP and gateway and netmask.
The only browser I have installed is kfm. hehe.
I'm not running samba, because I've been told that you don't have to if you don't want to access any windows files or printers, just the interweb.
Now, I can ping every external site I've tried from my linux box, but only certain sites are displayed. there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to which is displayed and which arent. google loads and displays fine, but yahoo won't load.
Kxicq and ksirc don't work
kmail can detect that there is a message in my pop inbox, but it can't download it (a timeout occurs)
any ideas/suggestions on how to get my internet working right?
