One computer stopped seeing network, others okay
One Kubuntu box (tried several releases) stopped seeing the network wirelessly after an 8-day power outage in Sept., but Ethernet still worked. Last week Ethernet stopped working. I tried the NIC out of the other desktop and that didn't help (the one in the failing box workes fine in the other). I also tried a new NIC. The router doesn't light for any port I plug that cable into but does if I use the same cable on another computer.
Since Hurricane Gustav seems to have cruppled madwifi and reinstallation didn't help, I tried wicd. I finally got rid of the message about enabling security, but it will try to find an IP address until it times out (90 sec, I think). It will do the same thing if I try to connect to one of the unprotected networks within range. But this is another problem, but if I can get the wireless up before the Ethernet, that's fine.
