1) performance relates two what you're doing with a connection, not how many there are. if you are looking at the number of client connections, then you have the ephemeral port range to play with, whatever that is on your particular system, e.g. 1025 to 65535
2) "enterprise" linux is an invention of the individual distribution vendor. any difference is going to be at their own doing.
3) to turn linux in to a router, search this forum for "ip_forward"
