I am running the ntp daemon on a SuSE 9.0 server, or at least I am ATTEMPTING to run it...
Out of the box install yielded a constant logged error:
/var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift.TEMP: No such file or directory
The server didn't seem to update system time at all. If it did, I surmise I would get the "lost synchronization" message, as I did with SuSE 7.3.
I downloaded the latest version from the ntp site, compiled and installed it. Now I get the following error:
sendto(128.194.254.9): Bad file descriptor
every ten minutes with the original error (No such file...) interspersed every hour or so.
I can find no reference to the "Bad file descriptor" error on the ntp site, nor in the man pages. And, I DID create /var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift.TEMP, as well as the /var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift file, which apparently was missing from the stock install. SuSE site does recognize ntp not working on 9.0 and alluded to a fix coming soon, but that was 7 months ago...and still no fix.
Can anybody offer any advice? I am working to complete an install of Slackware on another machine (not an expert here, just wanted a challenge) and could set it up there, but wanted to get it working on the SuSE server, since it is my main SAMBA box.
Thanks for any help
Mark
