NTFS trojen to infect other computers on the network?
 

Hello all.

In my quest to understand the linux filesystem, I got a harsh reminder of how XP's filesystem isn't as secure as linux's (anyone knows the default FC6 filesystem?).

I got infected with a trojen and a "backdoor" because of a stupid click on a "Yes" button.
I lost my icons, the system is always overloaded, the internet connection is overloaded... a mess.

The good thing about this ordeal is that I can't play Pro Evolution 6 (the only reason I keep an XP install) until I reinstall XP, so I use Linux much more :)

While I'm on linux, I like to listen to music... but my music files are on the XP partition.
So, using ntfs-3g, I mount the XP partition and play my mp3s.

My question is, if I mount an infected XP partition (virus, worm, trojen, whatever), can the virus on that partition infect other XP machines on the local network through linux?

the malicious application has to be running to spread, or other windows computers have to access the infected files or the malicious app. if you are mounting locally (not smbmount) and are not sharing the mounted drive with any other compuster (samba) you should be fine - yet i do recommend you get rid of the worm or whatever it is very quickly.
copy your mp3's onto a partition to which you have write access (locally) and run one of the many free linux av apps over those files.

defualt fc6 fs will probably be ext3

I'm going to format the XP partition ASAP, but it's good to know that if I mount them locally, the network is still safe.
