Noobe Domain Controler Setup

I am new to linux and am trying to setup a domain controller. I am behind a router/firewall which is the dhcp server.

Is there a site that will help me setup the dhcp/dns/etc... to function properly.

I know nothing about linux and need a little kick start!

P.S. This is for my home network not a business if that matters to you.

Yes NT controller... If that is what I need. Let me explain what i am trying to accomplish.

I have 4 pc's and 6 users. I want each user (me, wife, and kids) to have the ability to log onto any of the windows pc and have access to there email accounts, documents, etc (roaming profiles). Really all i want the server to do is manage the accounts. My router acts as the dhcp and my isp has there own dns. From my limited knowlege, i assume i would need to run dns to enable name resilution with in my intranet. As to dhcp i am unsure.

I have redhat 9 distribution and just finnished installing it last night. So when i get home from work today i am going to try to finish setting it up.

What should the linux box do dns? dhcp? ????

I tried setting up dns/dhcp with an eval ver of win2k3 server but only the server could access the internet...

Since your router does the dhcp, all you need on you redhat is samba

By the way, get apt

http://apt.freshrpms.net

since its just your home network, you can use your domain controller as the dns server then enable dns forwards to a dns server outside of your home network. That is what I use and it works fine.

Not sure what http://apt.freshrpms.net is. I dl'd it opened it but it does not appear to have done anything.

I did the search on samba and edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf as prescribed in the howto's(took me a while before i figured out where the file was located and that i had to be loged in as root to be able to edit it), i created the machine$ accounts and the user accounts. Rebooted linux and then tried to join one of the xp boxes to the domain. Well it did not work... could not find the domain controller.

I can see the domain in xp's network neighborhood but can not browse it.

it is a web site, with the program called apt, you download it, you install it with rpm -i.

it is a program that allows you to install, remove, and update packages very easily

I never configured wins on the xp boxes. I have them dhcp'd from router.

I was wondering if i needed to setup linux as a dhcp/dns server or if i should let the router handle it and use the lmhost file...
