nokia on at&t wireless network tethering with large file problems

i hope i'm posting to the right forum.

i have a nokia e71 on the at&t wireless network. i have it tethered to my gentoo machine over usb. i can ping google, surf the web, check email, great! however, if i try to do anything really network intensive such as download a large file or even get a fresh copy of the portage (emerge --sync), the transfer starts out fine and then just starts to hang. however, even after the transfer hangs i can continue to surf around and what not.

for example, if i start a wget of the kernel source ie
the transfer starts out fine, i see results like this:
116K/s eta 7m 3s
however, shortly thereafter it goes to this:
 --.-K/s eta 53m 8s
and hangs there indefinitely. has anyone else seen anything like this?

any help would be greatly appreciated.
