Thumbs down no internet ubuntu 8.10
Hi everyone my problem is as follows. I duel boot with XP/UBUNTU 8.10 my problem is I cannot get any internet access. XP allows me access but not Ubuntu I use a maxon bp3-ext with bigpond. Remember I have no access with Ubuntu so I cannot download programmes. The next problem I also have a HP Pavilion dv600 laptop I would like to use a linux based operating system with this but until I solve my net access problem I cannot change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Terry |

No internet on latest linux versions
Hi,
I have a similar problem, when I install a 'latest' Linux flavour (I have tried Ubuntu 8.10, fedora 10, suse 11 and Linux Mint 6) I have no internet access. However, the little icon in the status bar says I have a connection. But when I enter a URL in a browser (firefox 3) I get a 'server not found' error each time. When I revert to an older linux (in my case ubuntu 7.10) I have no problem accessing the internet. All works fine. Do these latest Linux flavours have some default security or firewall setting that I am not aware off which are not present in the older versions ? They detect the connections but seem unable to send any requests. Any ideas ? Thanks, Patrick |
pdemaers,
Please start a new thread for your problem, instead of hijacking this one. Thank you |
How is this hijacking ... ?
How do you mean hijacking. I have a very similar problem (actually the same problem) as the original poster and just wanted to share my situation in order to broaden the net while trying to get a solution. Why should I start a new thread for something that looks like the same problem ?
Cheers, Patrick |
@brotell/pdemaers:
Post the output of: ifconfig -a iwconfig -a lspci ----------------- I'm sure we can help both of you. ----------------- @brotell: this might help you: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=477067 I'm sure you know that you can download the files to a usb drive or something to get it to work. |
Here is the info
Hi,
not sure if this info is relevant anymore as I have reverted to Ubuntu 7.10 and I have a working internet connection. I need this box as a local test machine for my website development so as long as apache, php and mysql are working its fine. I use the internet connection to download software for installation/testing purposes and I can always do that from another box. But here is the requested info anyway: ~$ ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0B:CD:6F:09:76 inet addr:192.168.7.221 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::20b:cdff:fe6f:976/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:4761 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:2678 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:5880275 (5.6 MB) TX bytes:306341 (299.1 KB) Interrupt:20 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:3856 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3856 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:8986548 (8.5 MB) TX bytes:8986548 (8.5 MB) ~$ iwconfig -a -a No such device ~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P PCI to AGP Controller (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev c2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1) 05:02.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5782 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 03) 05:04.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 05) 05:04.1 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [Audio Port] (rev 05) 05:04.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [MPEG Port] (rev 05) 05:04.4 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [IR Port] (rev 05) I hope this helps ... @pdemaers:
I see you have a "Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5782" which is supported by linux...You could always try debian. they just release their latest version the other day. Sorry this isn't a good answer... |

try:
Code:
sudo dhclient eth0 If it fails, then post the output. also, the file "/etc/network/interfaces" should have an entry that looks something like this: Code:

Try any other LiveCD and look the module of eth0.
I recommended Mandriva live or PCLinuxOS. |
and "/etc/network/interfaces" had what I posted? youre sure the thing is plugged in correctly? and that the Network lights are flickering in the back?
