No Internet on linux?
 

I recently called up my aDsl provider (centurytel) and they said they dont support linux, and I will most likely not be able to connect to the internet.. Centurytel is one of the biggest companies in communications there is no way? Was the tech support just a liar?

I would find it hard to believe - how do you connect? via an ethernet router?

No they didn't lie, they just said they didn't support it, they didn't say it wasn't possible.

It all depends how they connect you and what with. What type of modem is it?

Don't you know Linux cant connect to the internet. In fact, only Windows can! HaHa. He's probably not a liar, he's just the tech not getting paid squat who is not informed.

Search Google for adsl howto or adsl tutorial. There is a lot of info out there. :)

Im using debian btw, and is downloading it now.

Try to get your ethernet working, I've found them more reliable than USB modems. ( for Linux or Windows ) Plus there dead simple to set up under Linux ( they require no drivers ). USB modems can require tricky driver set up ( it may have improved though since I had one ).

IS there a way to find out if my ethernet on my system board is working? Like a program or internet scan?

What type of board is it?

Nvidia, and I just re-installed drivers for it and its still not working :S There most be something I have to enable.

So where talking nforce? What kernel version?

How so you know its not working? is it connected to anything? are you getting errors from the kernel when you boot? etc.

Because I dissconnected the USB from my modem, put my Centurytel setup disk in. It said to use connect the cable.. Then I connected.. It searched and searched and said it could not be found.

So the modem you have does both USB and ethernet? and your checking it in windows?

Okay, goto control panel->system and look for network, check for your etherenet adapter there.

Unplug the USB shutdown, plug in the ethernet and then start the machine. DHCP probably isn't being connected when you put the Centurytel in.

You could also try ipconfig from the command line in windows.

In Linux when you restart the machine you need to start networking, I don't know what distro so you'd have to say, so we can check it there.

IT is not there, closest thing I have is remote.. Btw Im running windows XP. I want to get this situation before I install debian.

Try the latest nForce drivers at Nvidias site. Then check the control panel again. If it doesn't work, tell us what modem ( the link you posted above keeps timing out for me. ).

Blah! I checked I do have the latest version :S.. Is it possible something is unplugged or something? Its on my system board, but if it was unplugged my system wouldent work right?

and cant I just use the USB:)?
