Just thought I would suggest nslookup in level 2 debug mode.

#nslookup
>set d2
>www.fred.com

And you may see an error that makes sense. Best to make up domain names you've not used before each time to make sure it's sending out a fresh query.

I'm not at home, I'll have to try this when I get back Sunday afternoon.

Reads to me like an X window problem, because that is working normally in base Linux. I'm still a novice at troubleshooting X issues, so I probably won't be able to help further.

Well even E-Links, which is just a command line Internet browser, can't use DNS anymore.

I've used lynx, e-link's a new one.

Come to think of it, ping and nslookup use ICMP and UDP respectively, but http uses TCP. There could be something corrupted in the network stack that's only affecting TCP. Maybe something happened to your /etc/protocols file. See if yours has a line that reads "TCP 6 TCP".

Or see if you can telnet.

I thank everyone for their help on trying to solve my issue. It seems that the power loss had done more damage than I thought. So it seems I will have to do a fresh install, and get that new Linux smell back.

Oh and I now have a UPS so I shouldn't have to deal with this again.
